About us:

The National Institute for the Blind, Visually Impaired, and Deafblind in Iceland is a service, resource, educational, and rehabilitation center. The center services all blind, visually impaired, and deafblind individuals in Iceland. The institute’s objective is to increase the possibilities of those that are blind, visually impaired or deafblind to participate at all levels of society equally to others with emphasis on education, independent living, and vocational training.

The institute provides education, training, counseling and support to families, schools, and other service providers. General services provided are; training in mobility and independent living, teaching and advising to schools, teachers, students, and parents. We offer eye examinations and evaluation of sight, counseling, assistance with social insurance and benefits, assistive equipment and education in how to use the equipment. Training and education on computers, software, and related technology. Furthermore, the center provides custom glasses and eye prosthesis. The center also produces material in Braille and large print books.

The institute has a dedicated group of professional performing many different functions which include; opticians, teachers, mobility officers, ophthalmologist, social worker, computer and technical advisors, Braille production specialists, and a seminar coordinator along with admin staff.

A special focus for the institute has been on schools and Braille education and we have a team approach for each student in cooperation with the school, teachers, and parents. Appropriate material is created determined by the student’s needs and we emphasize more use of technology, Braille education and increased literacy in Braille.
