Intelligible City For All (European project)
The objective of the project Intelligible City For All is the enhancement of the sense of security and self confidence of presbycusis people, whose hearing degradation increases with age.
This project targets the design of embedded solutions in mass products of the larger public at reasonable cost for both populations: with pseudo-normal and presbyacoustic hearing.

Age Sensitive ICT Systems for Intelligible City For All
The objective of the project is the enhancement of the sense of security and self confidence of presbycusis people, whose hearing degradation increases with age. Two specific situations are considered :
- mobility in public confined spaces
- mobility in urban space
In the case of public confined spaces, the ICT solutions to be developed consist of intelligent loudspeakers for better intelligibility of vocal messages (airports, train stations, supermarkets, ..). Indeed, for presbycusis people, the more complex the sound ambiance in such places is, the worst the message intelligibility becomes with age. In the case of urban settings, this project seeks to develop a mobile system for better sound alarm localization of ambulance, police car, fire trucks, etc… indeed, the hearing degradation alters our perception of distance and direction of a sound source, especially when such source is in motion. For this, we foresee a design of alarm sounds capable of projecting better security for pedestrians. Such systems (intelligent loudspeakers and sound alarm localization) will be embedded in vehicles for improved security of presbycusis drivers about their environment. These systems will be "transparent' and embedded in mass products for the large public.
The targeted groups will be by enlarge the elderly population given that in Europe, 25% of persons aged over 65 years, almost 50% of persons over 75 years, up to 80% of persons over 85 years old, suffer from hearing deficit. Three research results will be applied across board:
1.presbyacoustic compensation algorithms
2.algorithm integration in loudspeakers (standard and acoustic glass forms)
3.measurement protocol for auditory perception in two situations (vocal announcement intelligibility, sound alarm perception), in two contexts (urban and public confined space) and in different countries.
Here, we target the design of embedded solutions in mass products of the larger public at reasonable cost for both populations: with pseudo-normal and presbyacoustic hearing, all this in the spirit of "Intelligent City of All" (I"CityForAll).
